 What is an ICL?

ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens or Implantable Contact Lens) is a lens that is put inside the eye. It can correct refractive error from +10D to -25D. For putting ICL we don't need to remove natural crystalline lens of the eye.

The ICL is made of Collamer®, a highly biocompatible advanced lens material which contains a small amount of purified collagen. Collamer does not cause a reaction inside the eye and it contains an ultraviolet filter that provides protection to the eye. Collamer is a material proprietary to STAAR Surgical Company, the company that manufactures ICL.

A trained ophthalmologist will insert the ICL through a small micro-incison, placing it inside the eye just behind the iris in front of the eye’s natural lens. The ICL is designed not to touch any internal eye structures and stay in place with no special care.

Every Patient is different, every eye is different. That is why every patient needs complete ICL work up. During workup

• Patient's vision 

• Pentacam scan

• AC Depth of Eye to check if there is space for ICL in the eye 

• Size of Cornea with calipar

• retina check

If your workup is normal, if your age is above 18, if your number is stable, If your retina is healthy then you are fit for ICL. Most of the patients who are unfit for lasik  due to thin cornea or big number are fit for ICL.

• ICL does not bring any permanent change in the eye. It is complete reversible if the patient is unhappy with the vision lens can be removed.

• ICL can treat very large numbers upto -24D where as Lasik Laser can treat upto -10D

• ICL can treat Patient with very thin corneas where as Lasik Laser can not be done on thin corneas.

•  Like Lasik ICL can not be seen or felt.Once done it becomes part of your body.

• Quality of vision with ICL is as good as Lasik Laser. 

• Time taken for ICL surgery is only 10 minutes like Lasik Laser.
